Themyscira is a magical island on Earth created by Zeus that serves as home to the Amazons and birthplace of the demigoddess Wonder Woman. It is a city-state reminiscent of ancient Greece and is protected by a magical shield that conceals the island from the outside world. When Zeus had created humanity, Ares held disdain for them and began corrupting men with hatred, violence, and war. In response to Ares' actions, Zeus created the Amazons, an all-female race of warrior women, to protect mankind from Ares by spreading love and compassion.
However, men had enslaved the Amazons until Hippolyta and Antiope led them to rebellion and escaped. Condemned by the Olympian Gods for his warmongering, Ares murdered nearly all the old gods, until he was sent to Earth by Zeus. In order to protect the world from Ares, Zeus fathered a daughter with Hippolyta imbued with his power so that she would one day defeat him. Furthermore, Zeus created the magical island paradise of Themyscira for the Amazons that concealed them from Ares and the outside world before succumbing to his wounds he sustained at the hands of Ares.
For thousands of years afterwards, the Amazons flourished and lived in peace under the rule of Queen Hippolyta, preparing and training for the eventual return of Ares. Themyscira would remain undisturbed until the year 1918 during World War I, when Steve Trevor crash-landed off the coast of the island and was rescued by Princess Diana. Soon after, the German Navy followed Steve Trevor to Themyscira where they fought the Amazonian army.
The Amazons won the battle, but at the deaths of Antiope and several Amazons. Despite the protests of Diana, Hippolyta ordered no action to be taken in the war abroad. That night, Diana broke into the large tower in Themyscira and took the Lasso of Hestia, her Amazonian shield, battle armor, and the God killer sword to kill Ares. As Diana prepared to sail away with Steve, Hippolyta arrived and warned Diana that mankind did not deserve her. Afterwards, Diana and Steve sailed away from Themyscira and travelled to the United Kingdom.

Themyscira is a mythical island of amazons located somewhere in the Mediterranean sea near to Greece. The island was Hippolyta's reward for aiding Zeus in imprisoning his brother Hades from the mortal world. Twenty years before Diana appear in the Man's world, a plane, inside of which there was a young Steve Trevor and his parents, crash-landed on the island.
Steve was the only one who survived the accident. He stayed on the island for five years with the help of Princess Diana and buried his parents there. In early 2004, the Themyscira Queen reportedly left the island to address the Vatican in Rome. Themiscyra along with Wonder Woman, Queen Hippolyta and the Amazons finally appear in the Smallville continuity.

Origin
These Amazons were a race of immortal super-women that lived on the magical Paradise Island. Favored by Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, the Amazons thrived in peace for centuries, but remained aloof from the world of Man. The youngest and most powerful of the Amazons, Princess Diana, left her protective nation of sisterhood, renouncing her immortality to fight the forces of evil in Man's World as Wonder Woman.
Pre-Crisis
In the days of Ancient Greece, many centuries ago, the Amazons were the foremost nation in the world. In Amazonia, women ruled and all was well. Then one day, Hercules, the strongest man in the world, stung by the taunts that he could not conquer the Amazon women, selected his strongest and fiercest warriors and landed on the Amazons' shores. The Amazons' queen, Hippolyte, met Hercules to a personal combat, because she knew that with her magic girdle, given to her by Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, she could not lose. Hippolyte defeated Hercules, but with deceit and trickery, he managed to secure Hippolyta's magic girdle
Post-Crisis
In the mid-1980s a storyline took place called Crisis on Infinite Earths in which all comics in the DC Universe ceased to exist and re-started with all new origins. When this happened it was explained that the Amazons were created by the goddess Artemis from the souls of women who had died at the hands of men, and were given new and stronger bodies, made from clay transformed into flesh and blood. These Amazons, like the Pre-Crisis versions, escaped Heracles and his men to an isolated and magically protected island, this one called Themyscira after the lost capital city of the Amazons' former homeland. In this new land, they were granted eternal youth and beauty. Some Amazons chose to remain behind, however, and, lacking immortality, formed the hidden nation of Bana-Mighdall.
Post-Flashpoint
Following the revamp of the history at the end of Flashpoint, the history of the Amazons was again revised. Themyscira is now called Paradise Island as it was before the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Hippolyta has blond hair and is the biological mother of Diana, whose biological father is Zeus. Hippolyta invented the "molding Diana from clay" story in order to protect her from the wrath of Zeus's wife Hera.
